What is 0x00000014 Error?

The Stop Code 0x00000014, known as CREATE_DELETE_LOCK_NOT_LOCKED, is a Windows Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error. It occurs when the system tries to release a lock (used during object creation or deletion) that was never actually acquired. In simple terms, Windows expected a system component to "hold on" to a lock before letting go — but that didn't happen. This signals a serious issue with how system resources are being handled, often by kernel-level drivers or processes.

Causes

  • 1. Driver Mismanagement: Faulty or outdated drivers may improperly handle resource locking mechanisms, leading to system-level crashes.
  • 2. Programming Errors in Kernel Code: Software (especially low-level system tools or antivirus) might try to delete objects or free resources without proper locking.
  • 3. Memory Corruption: Faulty RAM or corrupt memory addresses may interfere with lock ownership tracking.
  • 4. Malware or Rootkits: Advanced malware can tamper with thread handling or resource tracking, causing critical errors in object management.
  • 5. Corrupt System Files: Essential Windows files responsible for object creation and locking may be damaged or missing.

Resolution Steps

1. Update Device Drivers

  • Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager)
  • Right-click on suspicious or outdated drivers and select Update driver
  • Prioritize chipset, storage, and display drivers

2. Run Memory Diagnostics

  • Press Win + R, type mdsched.exe, and press Enter
  • Choose Restart now and check for problems
  • Let Windows test your RAM for issues

3. Scan for Malware

  • Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or a trusted antivirus tool
  • Quarantine or remove any detected threats

4. Repair System Files

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  • Run the following commands to fix corrupt system files:

sfc /scannow

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

5. Perform a System Restore or Clean Boot

  • Use System Restore to roll back to a stable configuration
  • Alternatively, perform a Clean Boot to isolate third-party services causing the crash
