What is 0x80040600 Error ?

The 0x80040600 error in Microsoft Outlook is a sign that the application can’t properly access your PST file (Personal Storage Table), which stores emails, contacts, calendars, and other Outlook data. This usually points to file corruption or damage. You might encounter this error when opening Outlook, sending/receiving emails, or even while launching the app.

Causes

  • Corrupted PST File: Often due to abrupt shutdowns or improper Outlook exits.
  • Oversized PST File: Older versions of Outlook have file size limits (e.g., 2GB in Outlook 2002)
  • Bad Sectors on Hard Drive: PST files stored in faulty sectors may become unreadable
  • Add-ins or Conflicting Software: Security or third-party add-ins can cause file-level conflicts
  • Outdated Outlook Versions: Running an older build can cause compatibility or performance issues.

Resolution Steps

1. Run the Inbox Repair Tool (ScanPST.exe)

Outlook comes with a built-in tool to repair corrupted PST files:

  • Navigate to your Outlook installation directory (usually C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\OfficeXX).
  • Run ScanPST.exe.
  • Browse to the PST file location (typically under Documents\Outlook Files).
  • Let the tool scan and repair the file.

2. Create a New PST File

If the damage is too severe:

  • Backup the corrupted PST file.
  • Open Outlook β†’ File β†’ Account Settings β†’ Data Files β†’ Add β†’ Create New PST.
  • Set it as the default data file.
  • Import emails from the backup file if possible.

3. Compact Your PST File

To reduce the chance of future corruption:

  • Go to File β†’ Account Settings β†’ Data Files.
  • Choose your PST β†’ Settings β†’ Compact Now.

4. Update or Repair Office

Ensure you're using the latest version of Outlook:

  • Open Outlook β†’ File β†’ Office Account β†’ Update Options β†’ Update Now.
  • Or go to Control Panel β†’ Programs β†’ Microsoft Office β†’ Change β†’ Repair.

5. Check Your Drive for Errors

  • Use Windows Disk Check:
  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Run chkdsk /f /r.
  • Restart the system and let the scan complete.
