1. Repair Microsoft Office Installation
Corrupted or incomplete Office files can cause this error.
- Open Control Panel โ Programs โ Programs and Features
- Select Microsoft Office 365, then click Change
- Choose Quick Repair โ If the issue persists, choose Online Repair
2. Delete Temporary and Corrupt Update Files
Office updates might have failed and left behind corrupt files.
- Press Win + R, type:
- C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download โ Press Enter
- Delete all files inside the folder
- Restart your PC
3. Sync System Date and Time
Incorrect date/time can cause update or sync failures.
- Open Settings โ Time & Language โ Date & Time
- Toggle Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically to ON
- Restart the system
4. Verify File Paths and Sync Settings (OneDrive or Office Apps)
The error can occur if Office is trying to open a missing or moved file.
- Check if the document or template location is correct in Office settings
- For OneDrive users:
- Open OneDrive โ Pause and Resume syncing โ Re-sign in if needed
5. Run the Office Troubleshooter
Let Windows diagnose and fix known Office issues.
- Open Settings โ Update & Security โ Troubleshoot
- Go to Additional Troubleshooters
- Select Windows Store Apps or use the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant tool
6. Disable Third-Party Antivirus Temporarily
Security software can sometimes block Office file paths.
- Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall
- Retry the Office action (install/update/open file)
- If successful, add Office to the security software's exclusion list
7. Reset Office Activation and Sign-in
Sign-in problems can cause path access errors with cloud-synced files.
- Open any Office app โ Sign out of your account
- Close the app, reopen it, and sign in again
- Go to File โ Account and ensure Office is activated properly
8. Run System File Checker (SFC)
Fix any underlying system issues affecting Office.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator
- Type the following command and press Enter:
- sfc /scannow
- After completion, restart your PC
9. Clean Boot Windows
Booting Windows with only essential services helps isolate software conflicts.
- Press Win + R, type: msconfig โ Enter
- Go to the Services tab โ Check Hide all Microsoft services
- Click Disable all
Restart your PC and try the Office task again
